Bearing characteristic number = μN/p, it is dimensionless.

Here, P = Unit bearing pressure

μ = Absolute viscosity
N = Speed (RPM)
At point C, viscosity is minimum.

  • The value of bearing characteristic number corresponding to minimum value of coefficient of friction is called bearing modulus (K).
  • Bearing should not be operated near critical value of ‘k’ because slight drop in the speed, or increase in load
    results in boundary lubrication.
    Ideally it should be 5 K , but for impact fluctuating load it is 15 K.
