Bearing Material Properties
- High compression strength
- High endurance endurance strength to avoid failure due to pitting.
- The bearing material should be soft to allow dirt particles to get embedded in the lining and avoid further trouble. This property is called embeddability.
- Conformability is ability of bearing material to accommodate shaft deflection and bearing accurately by plastic deformation without excessive wear and heating.
- Bondability is ability of bearing material to accommodate bonding of series of layers of the bearing material to steel shell and the strength of bond.
Remember:
- Babbit is most popular bearing material. Due to its silvery appearance, it is called white metal.
- Tin babbit possess excellent conformability and embeddability.
