Introduction to Friction
When a body moves or tends to move on another body, the property of two bodies by virtue of which a force is developed between two bodies, which opposes the relative motion, is called friction. This force is called the force of friction. The force of friction always tries to oppose the relative motion between two surfaces.
Consider a block of ‘W’ resting on a rough plane. The normal reaction due to weight of block is N. Let a force F is applied to block towards right. The frictional force f will be towards left. Now, if the magnitude of force ‘f’ is increased, then the block will not move because value of f will also increase correspondingly and will balance f.
A stage will reach when maximum value of f is reached known as limiting value of friction, and if now the magnitude of force is further increased, then the value of friction force f will decrease and block will start moving. This lower
value of f is called as kinetic friction force fk. The value of fk is constant and will always less than fL
